SICK product identifiers: connect a supplied serial number to the part-level document record

A supplier can provide a product-family name without identifying the particular unit being offered. SICK’s MLG-2 technical document describes a product identifier that includes both a part number and a serial number. For a sourcing file, retaining those separately labelled elements helps connect a supplied unit reference to the manufacturer’s document route.

This review reads only the product-identification section of document 9411013, checked on 14 October 2026. We did not inspect a sensor, query an actual serial number or assess the document’s cybersecurity instructions. It is a document-identification guide, with no engineering or security approval.

The documented identifier has several parts

On page 11 of the SICK-hosted technical information, dated 8 January 2025, the product ID is described as the pid.sick.com host followed by a part number and serial number separated by slashes. The text says many products display it as text and a QR code on the label or packaging.

This is a description in a particular manufacturer’s document. It is not proof that every SICK product has the same labelling, that a copied code is genuine or that a supplied unit has been checked by this publication. The document’s scope should stay attached to any note made from it.

Keep a model record and a unit record distinct

Our editorial suggestion is to retain the manufacturer’s part reference in the product-line record and the supplied serial reference in the unit record. Keep the seller’s original evidence with its date and order-line connection. That way, colleagues can tell whether a document concerns a product type or a particular item.

For example, a supplier might send a family brochure with a separate photo of a label. Do not assume the photograph establishes the relationship between that unit and the quoted line. Ask which offered item the label represents, and preserve any answer with the file rather than letting a familiar family name fill the gap.

Describe the lookup you actually performed

If a responsible reviewer opens an actual identifier route, record the displayed source, date and matching fields. A note saying that a document route was located is different from a note that the offered unit was matched to its current documentation. Only the first general route is described here; no unit-specific result was collected.

Do not create an example serial number that could be mistaken for a genuine product record. Missing unit identification should remain Needs editor verification. Where a label is illegible or the documents conflict, request clearer evidence from the issuer before marking the relationship resolved.

Leave the acceptance decision with its owner

Identifying documentation does not approve an installation, determine functional suitability or establish that an item has never been modified. It also does not verify the seller’s authority, warehouse stock, service eligibility or delivery commitment. Those assertions require distinct records and responsible review.

Our judgement is that keeping part and unit identity visible improves a sourcing handover without turning a manufacturer document into a guarantee. The output should name the document actually read and the unit evidence still missing. Any later engineering or security assessment must use the actual device and applicable current materials, beyond the limited identifier task performed here.
